How to roll a D20
This 20-sided dice roller starts with one die and 20 sides. Choose a count from 1 to 100 and a modifier, then roll. Every die is sampled independently.
D20 range and average
One unmodified D20 ranges from 1 to 20. Its expected face value is 10.5. For several dice, multiply that average by the count and add your modifier once.
| Roll | Lowest | Highest | Average |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1d20 | 1 | 20 | 10.5 |
| 2d20 | 2 | 40 | 21 |
| 3d20 | 3 | 60 | 31.5 |
| 4d20 | 4 | 80 | 42 |
| 5d20 | 5 | 100 | 52.5 |
| 10d20 | 10 | 200 | 105 |
Read the face before the modifier
The raw result is the number on the die. The total includes the modifier. Keep them separate when your game distinguishes a natural face from a modified total.
About the D20
A physical D20 is an icosahedron with twenty triangular faces. Many tabletop role-playing games use it for checks, which is why it is the die most often rolled with a modifier. Each face from 1 to 20 has the same 5% chance.
