How to roll a D8
This 8-sided dice roller starts with one die and 8 sides. Choose a count from 1 to 100 and a modifier, then roll. Every die is sampled independently.
D8 range and average
One unmodified D8 ranges from 1 to 8. Its expected face value is 4.5. For several dice, multiply that average by the count and add your modifier once.
| Roll | Lowest | Highest | Average |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1d8 | 1 | 8 | 4.5 |
| 2d8 | 2 | 16 | 9 |
| 3d8 | 3 | 24 | 13.5 |
| 4d8 | 4 | 32 | 18 |
| 5d8 | 5 | 40 | 22.5 |
| 10d8 | 10 | 80 | 45 |
Read the face before the modifier
The raw result is the number on the die. The total includes the modifier. Keep them separate when your game distinguishes a natural face from a modified total.
About the D8
A physical D8 is an octahedron with eight triangular faces. It sits between the D6 dice roller and the D10 in range, which makes it a common choice when a game wants a little more spread than a cube.
Try another die
Use the main dice roller for other sizes, including D3, D7 and D100. For D20 advantage or disadvantage, open the D&D dice roller. Nearby sizes: the D6 dice roller and D10 dice roller.
