How to roll a D4
This 4-sided dice roller starts with one die and 4 sides. Choose a count from 1 to 100 and a modifier, then roll. Every die is sampled independently.
D4 range and average
One unmodified D4 ranges from 1 to 4. Its expected face value is 2.5. For several dice, multiply that average by the count and add your modifier once.
| Roll | Lowest | Highest | Average |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1d4 | 1 | 4 | 2.5 |
| 2d4 | 2 | 8 | 5 |
| 3d4 | 3 | 12 | 7.5 |
| 4d4 | 4 | 16 | 10 |
| 5d4 | 5 | 20 | 12.5 |
| 10d4 | 10 | 40 | 25 |
Read the face before the modifier
The raw result is the number on the die. The total includes the modifier. Keep them separate when your game distinguishes a natural face from a modified total.
About the D4
A physical D4 is a tetrahedron: four triangular faces and no face that lies flat on top. Depending on the set, you read the number at the top point or along the bottom edges. This roller simply shows the value from 1 to 4.
