Start with the notation

A number before d is the dice count; the number after it is the sides. For example, 2d6 + 3 rolls two six-sided dice and adds three once to their sum. The dice rolling guide covers notation and averages in more detail.

Advantage and disadvantage

For one D20 test, advantage rolls two D20s and keeps the higher. Disadvantage keeps the lower. Add the modifier after selecting the die. These modes do not apply to a multi-die damage pool.

The table shows how often the kept die reaches a target number before any modifier. The figures are exact probabilities for fair dice, not a promise about your next roll.

Roll ability scores

The 4d6 drop-lowest preset rolls four D6s, discards one lowest die and sums the other three. Repeat for six score groups. Ask your table which character-creation method it uses.

Each score lands between 3 and 18. When two dice tie for lowest, only one of them is dropped.

Keep the rules separate

The tool shows dice values and totals. It does not choose your modifiers, interpret every natural result or manage a character sheet. Your rules and game master decide how results apply.

The Dice Roller is an independent tool and is not affiliated with any game publisher.
